Shaan Syed, Things to think about when looking at the sky

Things to think about when looking at the sky are a series of unique screen prints of vivid colour blends accompanied by 4 text works of hand written black script.

Shaan Syed created the screen prints Things to think about when looking at the sky during a visiting artist residency at Open Studio, Ontario, Canada. Using the screen of the printing process as a palette Syed applied liberal amounts of ink, blending one pure hue into another before pushing the ink through the mesh surface onto japanese rice paper. With a process based production the selected works are either unique or one of two. The resulting screen prints are a glorious ebullient glow of colour from one hue to the next, 'impossibly exquisite meditations on pigment, tint and tone'1.

The text works that accompany them are combinations of words found by Syed, fragments from the artist's daily life: Freedom to starve, The cost of living, Fruit Milk Shade and Eggs Bacon Beans Chips Burger. These too are screen prints on the same japanese rice paper, in editions of 10. Each is handwritten in a style familiar to news stands. These found fragments retain a resonance of the street or urban landscape introducing possible points of reflection for Things to think about when looking at the sky.
