Jamie Robinson, Inside the Belly of the Beast

No Show Space is pleased to present Inside the Belly of the Beast an exhibition of photographs by Jamie Robinson.

Robinson is a painter who takes photographs. He uses the tools of photography for their immediacy and efficiency simultaneously allowing him participation and detachment with his subjects and the wider world. His work often portrays various levels of mediation or a sense of observing the observer. The photograph with the television on in the background, the boy at the sidelines of an indoor american football game, the mother photographing her daughter, all confound who's looking at who.

Inside the Belly of the Beast is a show of 2 parts. Robinson presents an edit of 5 images from trips to Chicago, Marfa (Texas) and an operating theatre in Hertfordshire. The common thread portrays a sense of loss and removal. The football player changing into his kit in a deserted urban landscape cuts a lonely figure just as the brutally minimalist concrete Donald Judd sculpture sits isolated in the landscape. In contrast 2 slideshow presentations on video monitors are populated with characters encountered in the photographer's travels and adventures, inter-cut with more intimate moments of his life.

Robinson studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools, St. Martins and the Royal College of art in London. He has exhibited in the USA, Japan and Australia with work published in magazines and newspapers including Dazed and Confused, The Independent, The Guardian and Blueprint Magazine. He is the founding director of gallery Carter Presents, East London.
